Legislative Update Week of May 30th
2010 Legislative Session
Wednesday marked the end of the 2010 legislative session. All bills had to be acted on by the end of session. However, because the House and Senate could not agree on a budget for this year, both bodies will be returning next Wednesday for a “special session”. The budget is still very much up in the air. The next week will include lots of discussions about how to fix the state’s budget woes. Gambling will be given another shot in one form or another.
As you may have read in our email blast, Senate and House voted to accept the committee of conference report on HB 1393. The vote was 24-0 in the Senate and 177-150 in the House. HB 1393 was amended at the request of the Secretary of State and furthers his regulatory authority over 5-b public risk pools. New Hampshire 5-b risk pools include LGC, Primex and School Care. The Secretary of State has always had authority over the risk pools but felt he needed stronger provisions in order to truly regulate these entities then what exists in the current statute. This bill will hopefully result in more transparency from these organizations and what is being done with tax payer money. Additionally this legislation has no effect on our ongoing lawsuits with the LGC.
A big thank you to all of the members who have signed up to run for State Rep! The filing period ends next week and we have a great slate of candidates signed up. I am hoping to visit as many locals as possible in the upcoming months to talk about the 2010 legislative session, the 2010 election and what your local can do to help. If you would, please let me know if you have an upcoming local meeting I might be able to attend to speak briefly with your membership.
As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me if you need anything.
